EU-wide coordination about measures to restrict the free movement of citizens

Normally, European citizens have the right to move and reside freely within the EU. However, and due to the coronavirus, all the states adopted measures, some of which have had an impact directly on free movement, to fight against the spread of the virus.

The main problem of this actions is that each country has took their own measures, different from other states, and citizens from the EU and the rest of the world have been faced with so many different rules and procedures, unclear information about what to or when and where to travel.

For this reason, the European Commission and EU ministers have reached an agreement that will provide more clarity and predictability on measures that restrict free movement due to the coronavirus pandemic. The politicians have highlight that “we will not surmount the crisis by unilaterally closing borders but working together”.

Firstly, they have prepared a common map with color codes based on common criteria. Now, it is the turn of the states to fulfil with the data so the map can be updated on a weekly basis with accurate information on the epidemiological situation in the EU and its regions.

In this link you can see the map and check the restrictions in each country

Secondly, each country still decides what restrictive measures apply, but is must ensure that citizens have clear and timely information about what to do and which restrictions are in force. As a general rule, the information should be published 24 hours before the measure comes into effect, so all citizens know it.

The situation in Spain and how get the residence visa

Now, Spain has not closed the borders. However, and due to the pandemic, the Government is not giving visa tourist temporally to international citizens. This means that citizens from non-European countries and of the rest of states (not including Australia, Canada, China, Georgia, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand and Uruguay) they cannot enter to Spain.

Although this restriction, international citizens who want to get the Spanish residence and travel to the country they have a very attractive option to do it. This route offers the resident visa through a bank deposit of €1.000.000 into a Spanish bank. This visa it is valid for 1 year (2 renewable) and it is eligible to your family. So, you can travel to Spain as a resident and visit different properties, and if you want you can change the deposit for a property.

This option has been very well received for many of our clients, since it has allowed them to obtain a residence visa and travel to Spain, and once there, decide in which property invest.
